Involuntarily, the average American sees ââ¬Å"3000 ads in a day, and spends 2 years of their life watching television commercials (Kibourne). â⬠The disadvantages of female conventions have become bigger than ever before, and have come to driving women to extremes. Killing Us Softly 4 by Jean Kilbourne is a remarkably eye-opening documentary about how media affects our values, concepts, and ideals. As Iââ¬â¢ve already stated, we cannot run away from advertising. Most people believe theyââ¬â¢re not influenced by ads, but everyone is influenced by ads, whether they like it or not. Media shows us ideals of what we should be, what everyone should strive to be. They do more than try to sell us products. What we also donââ¬â¢t realize is most of the images weââ¬â¢re fed through advertising are an unrealistic ideal. Computer retouching, also known as Photoshop, is more popular than ever in advertising, and the women on adââ¬â¢s weââ¬â¢re comparing ourselves to, are computer created. Nobody looks like that, but we continue to compare ourselves to them.In doing so, it creates an absurd amount of pressure on women. Our self-esteem is affected greatly. Advertisements drive women to extremes, such as plastic surgery and eating disorders. Plastic surgery is more popular than ever, and 91% of it is performed on women (Kilbourne). Breast implants are one of the most common plastic surgeries, but when done, most women lose feeling and sensation in their breasts. When we lose feeling, the procedure is less about our pleasure, and more about other peopleââ¬â¢s satisfaction with a womanââ¬â¢s body.Advertisements show us that aging equals terror. Botox is injected into the face to remove any signs of emotion a woman could have. Ads also show us that women should be ashamed of what they eat, that most food is a ââ¬Å"guilty pleasure. â⬠Our culture, thatââ¬â¢s spreading to different parts of the world, has the capability to make woman everywhere to feel terrible about them selves. When a womanââ¬â¢s self confidence is brought down, they give themselves a ââ¬Å"makeoverâ⬠to try to look more desirable and feel better about themselves.A change of wardrobe, makeup, or hair can help a woman feel a lot better. In doing so, a woman also chooses to ââ¬Å"markâ⬠her self and how people see her. This brings me to Deborah Tannens essay: There is No Unmarked Woman. Tannen defines the term ââ¬Å"markedâ⬠as ââ¬Å"the way language alters the base meaning of a word by adding a linguistic particle (Tannen 68). â⬠Some examples are learn, being the unmarked word, and learnt, being marked and defining a more specific word. Marked words also convey ââ¬Å"femaleâ⬠words, as opposed to unmarked words conveying ââ¬Å"male. Just as similar, females have to make decisions about clothing and their appearance, whereas males do not; females are marked, males are unmarked. As Tannen states in the title, there is no unmarked woman. A woman has a widespread choice of decisions to make on her appearance so that she makes a statement about herself. The range of decisions for males to choose from is much narrower. Tannen examines that ââ¬Å"men can choose styles that are marked, but they donââ¬â¢t have toâ⬠¦ (Tannen 68). â⬠Women canââ¬â¢t even choose a formal title without judgment; ââ¬Å"Mrs. â⬠and ââ¬Å"Ms. â⬠communicate a relationship status.Tannen even goes as far as to state that writing the article on unmarked women may mark her as a feminist, not as a writer. She states ââ¬Å"merely mentioning women and men marked me as a feminist for some (Tannen 70). â⬠Between these two writers, they cover a lot of common ground. A marked woman, also a woman greatly affected by advertisements, succumbs to consumerism. Feminine qualities are devalued by advertisements; therefore being marked is also devalued. Men are portrayed in advertisements to not have any feminine qualities, thus expressing disapproval for all things feminine.Consequently, men devalue women, and feminine qualities are consistently being devalued. Human qualities are divided into two separate parts and labeled, ââ¬Å"masculineâ⬠and ââ¬Å"feminine. â⬠An unmarked man conveys being ââ¬Å"masculineâ⬠while marked women are ââ¬Å"feminineâ⬠and therefore not taken as seriously as men. Kilbourne states ââ¬Å"men basically donââ¬â¢t live in a world in which their bodies are routinely scrutinized, criticized, and judged, whereas woman and girls do (Kilbourne). â⬠The disadvantages of gender conventions heavily outweigh the benefits. In fact, I couldnââ¬â¢t find any reasonable benefits.Advertisements put pressure on women to choose to dress in a certain way, or do their hair this way. They put pressure on women to be wanted and beautiful. The idea that there is no marked woman is because we have such a vast variety of choices in how we look. Our ideals are inclined greatly thanks to advertising. Most marked choices that women make are because of ideals that advertisements feed us. These gender conventions will never cease, and theyââ¬â¢ll continue to perpetuate. Why? Well, because advertisers make a profit off of making us feel terrible about ourselves.As I stated before, when we feel our self-esteem is low, we try to ââ¬Å"make overâ⬠ourselves. The only way to ââ¬Å"make overâ⬠your self is through buying products. Females try to fit the ideal thatââ¬â¢s fed to us. Females do indeed feel a lot of pressure to be desired. After watching Killing Us Softly 4, I understand where this pressure comes from. No one seems to think that advertising really affects us in any way, when you already know it greatly does. The amounts of decisions we have to make about how we look are overwhelming.I believe that Kilbournes documentary is tremendously relieving because sheââ¬â¢s opening peopleââ¬â¢s eyes to the fact that the media does in fact influence us. Even though Tannen tells us that thereââ¬â¢s no escaping these judgments based off our decisions, Kilbourne lifts a weight off our shoulders by telling us that these standards are ridiculously unrealistic. More women than ever have disorders and issues because of the demand to basically look unreal, and I think that we need to start educating our youth about advertising and its harmful effects.During adolescence, weââ¬â¢re greatly influenced by everything around us, and I think itââ¬â¢d be beneficial to show children in middle school documentaries similar to Jean Kilbourneââ¬â¢s series of Killing Us Softly. People need to understand the images ads show us are wrong. Women will always feel pressure to be acceptable to everyone, but the pressures ads are giving women nowadays are misleading. I believe that the fashion industry, with its ever increasingly thin models, and the advertisement industry, devaluing women and creating mpractical ideals, both have some small, but significant, changes to make. I also believe that people should be educated in advertising as it becomes harder to avoid, to understand the industry the way Kilbourne does. Holden really liked one girl but he had very low self confidence so he never told her how he felt once again because he didnââ¬â¢t develop a lot of people skills to communicate with others. Parents are a huge part of growing up and guidance and thatââ¬â¢s another step in his life that wasnââ¬â¢t quite there. Holdenââ¬â¢s parents never really pushed him to succeed like they did for his other brother. Since Holden didnââ¬â¢t excel in school like his brother his parents kind of lost interest in him and then he ended up losing interest in schooling as well. Eventually Holden actually flunked out of school which is another example of low self confidence towards his well being, by not being pushed by his parents he simply lost motivation. His parents could have helped with getting him counseling but he didnââ¬â¢t go along with what that wanted for him after a while he was lost and didnââ¬â¢t have a plan for himself and what he wanted to do with his life. Mental is a very over used word especially in his case I believe that a better way to describe this would be just a misunderstood teen with not real adult figure in his life to help him get his life in order. This is why I believe that Holden is your average teen with that took a different path then most would and it ended up being not a very sturdy path to follow.

Verbal Aggression Verbal aggression is message behavior which attacks a person's self-concept in order to deliver psychological pain.(Infante, 1995) Studies of verbal aggression have focused primarily on children and adolescents in educational and social settings. Very few studies were found to examine verbal aggression in adults in the workplace.(Ebbesen, Duncan, Konecni, 1974) The consequences of verbal aggression in the workplace can lead to social isolation, job related stress, health related problems, as well as problems in career advancement. It therefore should be considered important, for the individual and management, to identify and address the causes of verbal aggression. This program attempts to understand verbal aggression by 1) identifying the various functions of verbal aggression. 2) identifying the antecedent conditions of verbal aggression. 3) Avoiding the antecedent conditions of verbal aggression. Method Subject The subject, Shirley J., is a 49 year old African American female. Shirley J. has several advanced degrees and is employed as a school psychologist in a metropolitan school district. She is married with two adult children. The subject readily agreed that the target behavior, verbal aggression, is a problem as it interferes with her relationships with others. She was enthusiastic in her desire to reduce, if not eliminate, this behavior. It would seem that self-monitoring for verbal aggression and antecedent control would be valuable as it would allow for consistent avoidance of verbal aggression. As a school psychologist the subject was very familiar with the basic principles of applied behavioral analysis and frequently offered programmatic suggestions. A behavioral contract was developed jointly between the therapist and subject. The contract outlined the target behavior, success criteria, and individual responsibilities of the therapist and subject. (see Appendix A) Apparatus A basic checklist was used to document the frequency of verbal aggression on a daily basis. The checklist was designed to track only the occurrence of the behavior. It was felt by the therapist that the content of the verbally aggressive message would be too open for subjective interpretation and that no meaningful data would be gained from such documentation. In addition the subject made frequent comments of significant success or failure in avoiding verbal aggression for discussion with the therapist. The weekly discussions were used to evaluate the appropriateness of the procedures used and make any necessary adjustments to the program. Procedure For the first two weeks of the program no intervention was applied. Given that the subject self-reported that verbal aggression was a problem it was important to determine if the frequency of the behavior merited intervention. Therefore, the subject documented the daily frequency of verbal aggression. The results of the baseline period revealed a high rate of verbal aggression. (see Appendix B) Given the results of the baseline data as well as the demanding, often stressful, nature of the subjects job, it was mutually agreed that reducing verbal aggression would be the focus of the program. Verbal aggression was defined as cursing, yelling, and screaming at others. The agreed upon goals of the program was to decrease verbal aggression by 75% of baseline for four consecutive weeks. Treatment would consist of identifying and avoiding the antecedent conditions to verbal aggression. Avoidance of the antecedents is considered less restrictive, more proactive, and most effective. During the initial consultation it was determined that the antecedent conditions included, but was not limited to: work stress, time of day, verbal behavior of others (ie. tone of voice, inflection of voice and content of conversation, etc.), and non-verbal behavior of others (ie. facial expression, body posture, eye contact, etc.). In addition, the subject was required to self monitor for the following antecedents: clenched fists, tight jaw, rapid heart beat, and the emotions of anger, frustration and disappointment. Lastly, it was suggested by Infante (1995) that appropriate strategy must be taken to prevent verbal aggression from escalating. Successful avoidance of the antecedent conditions consisted of removing oneself from stressful situations, when possible, as well as not responding verbally when provoked. Weekly consultation revealed that verbal aggression was most often used to: 1) Escape demand situations. 2) Avoid demand situations. 3) Relieve job stress. Later, the industrial revolution changed the nature of work to the factory system where employees were supervised by a person who was not the owner of the business. The workers undertook a trade test in order to join an organization and their jobs became more stable. Organizations in the 1920s began to have personnel departments to deal with employee payments, recruit workers and ensure compliance with government regulations. After World War II, there emerged new trends in personnel management with the formation of unions. The personnel managers had to deal with the unions to negotiate workers employment conditions hence the role of industrial relations emerged. According to Sims (2007), the personnel managers also undertook the role of recruiting and training women who were absorbed in the labour market. There was also the need to improve productivity hence the matching of people with jobs and concern for the worker's needs. It was believed that a satisfied worker was more productive. The development of theories such as Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of needs led to the emergence of new ways of managing people.
